Aleata May researching in 2001 on Quebec/Ontario Giles
It is kinda late in the day, but I think I solve the problem for where the Giles family of Aleata May came from in Ireland.
In the 1851 Census for Beauharnois County, Canada East (Quebec) Henry Giles born Ireland c.1812 and his wife Martha Smiten (for some reason the census taker wrote down the maiden name) born Ireland c.1809. (In the 1861 Census for Egremont, Grey County, Canada West [Ontario] the census taker kindly wrote down the year of marriage which was 1835 and would have taken place in Ireland.) Children of Henry and Martha were:
Mary born in Ireland c.1835
William born in Canada c.1837
Robert born in Canada c.1839
John born in Canada c.1841
Thomas H. born in Canada c.1845
Henry born in Canada c.1848
Margaret born in Canada c.1852
In the Griffiths Valuation Index of Ireland 1848 to 1864, the only places I find the surnames of GILES and SMITON being in the same places are the parishes of Clogher and Errigal Keerogue both in the County of Tyrone. The Henry/Martha Giles family was originally Church of Ireland/England (Anglican) and remained so in Canada for a long time even though son Robert Giles and his family eventually became Methodist. They may have even spelled their surname the old fashion way of GYLES which survives in the Youghal, Cork line of Gyles and in their Manitoba and Saskatchewan descendants to this day.
