Antoinette Gilles was born on June 22, 1925, at Sioux City, Iowa to Peter and Rose Mary Bullerman. In 1931, the Gilles family moved to a farm near Wilmont, Minnesota and Antoinette attended Wilmont Public School. While she was in eighth grade, Antoinette lost her eyesight. The family moved to a farm in near Currie, Minnesota in 1940 and in 1951 they retired and moved to Slayton. Antoinette lived with her parents and cared for them. Her mother died in 1961 and her father died in 1971. Antoinette passed away on August 28, 2006, at the Sioux Valley Hospital at the age of 81. She was a member of St. Annís Church in Slayton and belonged to the WCCW and Bible Study Group and formerly belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America. Antoinette also belonged to the Slayton Senior Citizens, Senior Dining and served as both president and vice president for several years, was on the Murray County Committee on Aging board, member of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters and did counseling for the blind in Adrian and Mountain Lake. Antoinette spoke for the Seeing Eye Dog Program for over 20 years. She also enjoyed baseball, especially the Twins, listening to the television and going to coffee with her many friends.
Survivors include one sister LaVonne Vosberg, of Worthington, MN; several nieces and nephews; one aunt Hilda Voss, Slayton, MN; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Everett Gilles and her four Seeing Eye Dogs.
Funeral services were held at St. Annís Church in Slayton, MN on Friday, September 1, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Patrick Arens officiating. The organist was Jean Tentinger. The song leader was Lavina Fox. The pallbearers were Jim Surprenant, Richard Gaul, Siebe Muller, Darryl Voss, Allen Nasers, and Dennis Sigurdson. Interment is at St. Annís Cemetery Slayton, MN.
