I'm a direct descendant of Uriah Gillikin, and would be most interested in the "court papers" you mentioned, Sue. I'm assuming those are related to guardianship of Uriah's minor children in 1843.
One correction about Uriah's first wife. She was Mary Morton, probable dau of John Throckmorton and Nancy Ann Wicker Davis. Mary first married John Williston, son of Thomas Williston. John died at sea in 1805. An 1805 gift deed (Book O) from Thomas Williston to his daughter in law Mary, wife of John Williston, indicates Thomas had been informed of his son's death. Uriah Gillikin married 6 Jul 1807 to John's widow Mary. It took until 1810 to settle the estate of John Williston, and along the way in 1806 there is a court petition which states Thomas Williston is the father of John and John died 1806 [sic], also states widow Polly now intermarried with Uriah "Gilkin." Uriah's will is ambiguous, and was only discovered misfiled in the NC State Archives fairly recently. This is why Mitchell's Index doesn't show anything for Uriah Gillikin. However it was found by Dr. Robert Glenn Lewis, and is included in the revised edition of Carteret County Wills, 1700-1880 by Rebecca Sanders. There is some doubt about Susan Jane Gillikin b 16 Jan 1832 d 3 Nov 1895 (headstone, Gillikin-Golden Families Cemetery on Fire Tower Rd.) being a dau of Mary. I'm hoping that the minor children of Uriah Gillikin dec'd are mentioned in the 1843 minutes of the Carteret Court. He doesn't refer to any daughters by name in his will.
