Margaret , Zachariah, John, and Wyatt Gillis of Forrest Co. Mississippi
After reading this forum I have concluded that I am a descendant of Malcolm Gillis through his daughter Margaret Mary. Since I don't see too much information on Malcolm's kids, I will add what I know.
Margaret Mary Gillis married Andrew Denham Carter, and they are one set of my great grandparents. They are both buried at Gillis Cemetery on James Street in Hattiesburg, MS. Three of her brothers Zacharia, John, and Wyatt are buried there as well.
According to family stories and inscriptions on gravestones John was in medical school at Tulane when the Civil War broke out. He took the train home to Hattiesburg to join the Confederate Army, where he eventually rose to the rank of Captain while eventually forming his own cavalry unit. He was the first medical doctor in the city of Hattiesburg.
Both Zacahria and Wyatt, John's younger brothers, fought in the Civil War as well, Wyatt being a teenager throughout the war.
Some of John's descendants are definitely still living in the Hattiesburg area. There was, until a few short years ago a dentist named Gillis practicing there.
I also had for a long time wondered where my grandfather Colin Carter got his middle name "Pleasant", but seeing that his mother had a brother named Pleasant Tisdale, now I know!
I have online pictures of all their graves on my facebook account (search:Pat Carter)and might have a picture of my great grandmother Margaret somewhere in my dad's possessions.
