I's a long shot but I am intrigued that your Gillows of Kent operated a brewery. My Lancashire Gillows were "maltsters". As I understand it a maltster was someone who processed grain into malt to use as an ingredient in beer. They were maltsters for generations and lived at "Malt Kiln Farm" in Little Eccleston in the Fylde district of Lancashire. One thing that might help tie it together: were your Gillows Roman Catholic? Mine were and in the 1600s-1700s some of them paid dearly for it. I know some of them left Lancashire for different parts of England. I will dig around in my papers but in the mean time please let me know what you think.
