George Gilreath, @1765-1840+
George and his son, Nathan Gilreath, signed a petition (ND #3271), under the provisions of the General law of 1827, submitted to the Legislature in 1828, for a new Turnpike road. The Turnpike was to run through the Saluda Mountain at or near the head of the Middle Fork of the Saluda River.
At about the same time, his brother, Jesse Gilreath, signed an identical petition (ND #3269) for this same Turnpike.
In Feb 1828, George also sold a parcel of land.On this deed, the land description includes a statement that one of his neighbors was the widow Gilreath. It is assumed that this was the widow of George's brother, Jesse.Helps establish a time (year)of death for Jesse.
On the 1830 census, George, his son Alexander, and nephews Hardy J. and Alfred are listed on page 298.Mary Gilreath (widow) and her son George are listed on page 300.On this census, all individuals are reported in a form of alphabetical sequence, not allowing one to know the neighbors of any particular individual
George is last listed on the 1840 census and seems to have died intestate (broke?). Again, all individuals living in Greenville County are listed in a form of alphabetical order by last name (all "G"s randomly listed together).
Wesley, Alfred, Hardy J.,and Elisha G. Gilreath are all listed on page 231 of the 1840 Greenville County census.George, Nathan and Ira Gilreath are listed on page 296 in the same County.
I have never been able to find out the Township or district associated with the page on which George Gilreath's name appears in 1840.Later indications lead me to believe that George was now living in the northwest corner of Greenville County, near the NC border and Pickens County line.
Have no clue about Ira Gilreath unless he is George's son, Jesse (see Murray County, GA - 1850).
Melvin
