Snake, Wilson, and Stud Girty-Civil War Records
Posted by: Virginia Moore Date: February 16, 2002 at 00:29:14

I have the Civil War Pension Records for Snake, Wilson, and Stud Girty. Wilson signed a document in Snake's file and Snake signed a document in Wilson's file regarding their witnessing each other's injury. However, their relationship was not mentioned. (There is quite a bit of family info in all files.) Stud's file has documents "signed" by Wilson and Snake..and officials DID question their relationship to Stud.

Snake's deposition states, "I am no relation but was an orphan and raised by the father of Stud Girty and have known him since a boy. We both lived together before entering the service about six miles from the mouth of the Canadian River in the Cherokee Nation".......

On letterhead paper of "Office of J.W. Bumgarner dealer in General Merchandise" and signed by Irving V..Dept Clerk, it states, "Snake Girty is no brother to Stud Girty at all but bear the name Girty because Wilson Girty father raised him when but a little boy-and he has been going by that name every since. Wilson and Snake Girty are good men I do not believe either of them would tell a fals-hood for a few dollars". (typed as written) I did not find a statement from Wilson regarding their relationship.

These two statements would lead one to believe that Wilson and Stud are brothers, but not Snake and Wilson. It would be my assumption that one could say Jack "Panther" Girty "adopted" Snake. In addition, if Daniel R. Girty and Ed/Ned Girty's statements about their mother being Wilson Girty's sister is correct, then Wilson would be their uncle and Snake would be Wilson's brother-in-law by marriage. So the big question remains...who is Snake's biological father?? This certainly puts a lot of questions in MY mind!!

(My line is: Snake Girty(gg-grandfather),Daniel R. Girty (g-grandfather..I have his picture), Dan Girty (grandfather), and Margaret Girty (my mother).
