Jack Girty/ Wilson statement 1881
Posted by: Keely Denning (ID *****5275) Date: July 26, 2006 at 11:45:04
  of 181

The surname of GIRTY came up in a statement by Samuel Charley "his Cherokee blood from his mother who was a sister to the late Jack Girty" and a statement made by Wilson Girty, dated December 6, 1881.

The statement in part is as follows:

"Statement of Wilson Girty, a councilor from Canadian, in the case of Samuel Charley and family claiming Cherokee citizenship..."

"The mother of Samuel Charley was a sister of my father. Samuel Charley's father was a Shawnee Indian- Samuel Charley's mother was a Cherokee. I have known Samuel Charley ever since I can remember- He lived a great deal at my father's house."

I am seeking the names of Jack Girty's sister(s) or any information on the Charley line.

Samuel Charley was my gr grandfather.

Also, on the 1841 Cherokee claims records lists Jack Girty as being part Cherokee, white and negro. Does anyone know where the Black blood comes from?

Thank you for any help that can be provided.
