Thank you very much. I know Sam joined Co. M 14th Cavalry on July 3, 1863, Kansas records show him as deserting Feb. 22, 1864. I had not found record as to him applying for pension, so that is very interesting information! The 14th was the first unit at Lawrence when Quantrill attacked.
