Traci, I'm a Githens, also, from Indiana. My parents had conversations over the years with Sherwood Githens Jr. who wrote the book that is now in the Library of Congress "The Githens Family in America 1741-1977. I have a copy of my own that my father acquired for me and my sister back in 1977. I saw your posting about your late mother and wondered if you had seen the book. Her name and heritage as you describe it is in the book on page 144. It stops with your mother and lists no descendents. It lists her sisters Levina, Dora, Margaret, and brothers James, George, and Richard. You may already have these details, but if not I can fill in a few blanks for you from my book.
I know that Sherwood Githens wrote to many of the people whom he was able to locate in order to fill in the blanks for the book. He did this over a number of years. Perhaps your mother never responded to his requests for information or perhaps he was not able to locate her after her marriage; although several of her sisters and brothers have descendents listed. They should have been able to provide info for Sherwood to locate her. It looks as though you may have many cousins out there.
I would love to hear from you. Call me "Ginger."
