'CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP'
On last Saturday the undersigned sold their interest in the Chariton Leader to MR. H.W. GITTINGER, who will continue the lease and business of the paper. The firm of DEWEY & LOCKWOOD has existed since last June and has done a very satisfactory business during that time.
Six years ago last November, W.H. DEWEY became the editor of this paper, and during that time he has tried to give the patrons of the paper and the democrats of the county a good, clean, democratic county weekly. We have had the satisfaction during that time of seeing democrats elected to more years in salaried county offices than in twenty years before. Of course he does not claim that the paper accomplished the result, but many republicans have assured him that the policy the paper has pursued has had much to do with bringing about the result.
Be this as it may, MR. DEWEY has retired from the paper, but retired feeling that he has left the paper in excellent hands. We regard HENRY GITTINGER as one of that small crowd of fellows who ought to be editing a county weekly all the time. His original and witty work on the Russell Union is well remembered in this county. It drives away the blues and makes a fellow with a bad stomach laugh till he forgets his stomach to read any issue of a paper which HENRY gets out. And back of it all is always found good common sense together with some advice for the readers. We wish MR. GITTINGER every success and feel confident that the readers of our paper will welcome him to the work.
We wish to thank the business men of Chariton and the people of the county generally for their liberal patronage during our connection with the paper.
Respectfully,
DEWEY & LOCKWOOD.
