Cindy, I would love to correspond with you regarding Glover ancestry. As for Helen (Ellen) Russell vs. Wakeman as John Glover's (1648 - 1679), my sources for believing that she was Russell are based on the following:
Henry's wife, Helena is identified as Helena Davis in the book"The Families of Old Fairfield" (compiled and edited by DonaldLines Jacobus, 1930) and Helena Russell in Jacobus' Families ofAncient New Haven (published in 1974). Ted Kleymeyer's (from Austin, Texas) a professional genealogist wrote to me in December, 1991 statingresearch which identifies her maiden name to beRussell: In the past, there was some conflict among researchers asto Helena's surname, but it has been fairly well acceptednow that it was Russell. Some researchers in the past eventhought her name might be Wakeman. This is more or less howthe confusion began. Martha Wakeman, sister of John Wakeman, was the wife of William Davis. Their only child, a daughter, married William Russell, of New Haven. Helena was clearlycloser in age to William Russell than to William Davis, whomarried at Bewdley, England, in 1621. All of the more recentsources say that Helena was the sister of William Russell. She is mentioned in letters to Gov. Winthrop."
In the New Haven Town Records Volume 1 (New Haven Colony Historical Society), we find record of Henry Glover presenting the Last Will & Testament of William Russell
(record at a Court held at New Haven, Feb. 7th 1664 - P. 128). Henry accepts the responsibility of administering the Will. There is a footnote on Page 129 in reference to Ellin (Helen) Glover which reads: "There is some reason for supposing that Ellen, wife of Henry Glover, was a sister of Wm. Russell."
In the same New Haven Town Records, Volume 1, we see evidence of Henry Glover having responsibility for one of William Russell's children. At a Feb. 7th, 1667 meeting, John Davenport Senior, one of the founders of New Haven spoke of the need for a school for the fitting of the Children for the service of God. Henry Glover agreed with what was presented and advised that one of William Russell's sons, (Noadiah who graduated Harvard in 1681) would be a potential student of this school.
If you can reply with your info on why you believe her to be "Wakeman" and/or if you want to respond to some of my queries directly, my e-mail is [email protected] or feel free to use this Gen Forum
