Notes for Andree-Angelique JEANNES: Name also appears in some records as Andree Angelique COCHON, however the COCHON family has never been connected to the GODIN’s.

Notes for Jean Baptiste L’Huitre GODIN: In 1779, Jean Baptiste sold his property in Cacouna to settle near the Riviere St. Jean, on the ancestral property, with his brother, Antoine. But the arrival of large numbers of Loyalists in 1783 caused problems for the Acadians on the St. Jean River. They had not yet obtained titles for their property and ownership squabbles erupted. The GODIN’s left the area and joined the Acadians (THERIAULT and PINET) along the northern New Brunswick Rivers. Jean Baptiste and Antoine established themselves in Caraquet, New Brunswick around 1786, west of the village now known as Bertrand. They are the ancestors of the GODIN’s of Maisonnette, Petit Rocher, Pokemouche, Lameque, Tracadie, Neguac and the Jacquet River.

Notes for Angelique BERGERON: Angelique’s sister, Madeleine, married Jean Baptiste L’Huitre GODIN’s brother, Antoine.

Notes for Michel GODIN: Michel and Helene lost three young children within two weeks in April of 1808…the cause is unknown, possibly an epidemic?

Marguerite is found on the 1920 U.S. census living in Detroit, Michigan with the family of her daughter, “Ada.” In 1930, Marguerite is found living with her daughter, Mathiled THOMAS and her family in Grand Marais, Michigan. Both Marguerite and her husband are buried at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan.

Notes for Francois Xavier GOUPIL: “Frank” is listed on the 1900 U.S. census as a “hotel keeper,” which refers to the European Hotel he owned in Grand Marais, Michigan at that time.

Generation Twelve

Marie Rose12 (Marguerite11, Joseph10, Joseph Moise9, Michel8, Jean Baptiste L’Huitre7, Jean Rene6, Gabriel5, Pierre4, Claude³, Vorle², Maurice¹) “Margarite” GOUPIL, b. 4 Jan 1872, Shippagan, New Brunswick, Canada; d. 29 Jun 1906, Grand Marais, Michigan. Married to Samuel VEILLETTE ( b. 1862, Canada; d. aft. 1930, Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan) abt. 1890, prob. Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan. Children of Marie Rose “Margarite” GOUPIL and Samuel VEILLETTE:

1. Mary E. VEILLETTE, b. 17 Nov 1889, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 11 Oct 1900, Grand Marais, Michigan.

2. Jennie VEILLETTE, b. 1893, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. abt. 1989, Seney Twsp., Schoolcraft County, Michigan. Married to Albert NELSON in 1908, Grand Marais, Michigan. Four children known.

3. Ralph Patrick VEILLETTE, b. 1895, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

7. Valerie VEILLETTE, b. 1902, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

8. Ora VEILLETTE, b. 1904, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

9. Alice G. VEILLETTE, b. June 1906, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK. Twin to Child.

10. Child VEILLETTE, b. June 1906, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. June 1906, Grand Marais, MI. Twin to Alice.

Notes for Marie Rose “Margarite” GOUPIL: Margarite died after giving birth to twins. One of the twins also died. Margarite’s sister, Louise, and her husband adopted baby, Alice. Sometime after 1910, two of her sons, Ralph Patrick and Austin, were sent to live at the St. Francis Home for Orphans, and the three youngest daughters, Louise, Valerie and Ora, were sent to live at a convent. These three sisters all later became nuns. It is not known what became of Austin. Ralph is found in 1920 living in Detroit, Michigan and working as a machinist. Margarite and her husband are both buried at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais, Michigan. On the 1910 US Census, the household includes a grandson Dorman VEILLETTE. It is uncertain whose child he is, but it is possible that he is the illegitimate son of their oldest daughter, Jennie. He does not appear again in any other family record, and may have also been sent to the orphanage. Margarite appears in some records, including her cemetery record, as Margaret.

Notes for Samuel VEILLETTE: Samuel is found living alone on the 1930 US Census in Grand Marais, Michigan. It is unclear why he chose to send his children away after his wife’s death, but it is believed that he was simply unable to properly care for such a large family alone. It appears he never remarried.

Mathiled12 (Marguerite11, Joseph10, Joseph Moise9, Michel8, Jean Baptiste L’Huitre7, Jean Rene6, Pierre5, Gabriel4, Claude³, Vorle², Maurice¹) “Tillie” GOUPIL, b. 24 Feb 1875, Shippagan, New Brunswick; d. 1968, Grand Marais, Michigan. Married to 1) Anthony B. BLOCK (b. May 1873, Germany; d. 22 Oct 1901, Grand Marais, Michigan). Children of Mathiled “Tillie” GOUPIL and Anthony BLOCK:

1. Rexford J. BLOCK, b. 1899, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 1976, Grand Marais, Michigan.

2. Margaret M. BLOCK, b. 1901, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

3. Hazel BLOCK, b. 1901, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 1989, Grand Marais, Michigan.

Notes for Anthony B. BLOCK: Family lore indicates that he was killed when he was kicked in the head by a horse. Anthony and their children, Rex and Hazel, are buried at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan.

Married to 2) David THOMAS (b. 1872, Michigan; d. aft. 1930, Michigan) in 1903 at Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan. Children of Mathiled “Tillie” GOUPIL and David THOMAS:

1. Charles R. THOMAS, b. 1904, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

2. John A. THOMAS, b. 1907, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK. Twin to James.

3. James A. THOMAS, b. 1907, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK. Twin to John.

4. Francis D. THOMAS, b. 1912, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

5. Laone Bailey THOMAS, b. 1916, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 1941, Grand Marais, Michigan.

6. William J. THOMAS, b. 1917, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

Notes for Mathiled “Tillie” GOUPIL: Tillie’s second husband, David THOMAS, is listed on the US Census of 1930 as a “salesman for a candy store.” Mathiled also appears in records as Matilda or Tillie. David, Mathiled and Laone Bailey THOMAS are buried in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan.

Marie Florida12 (Marguerite11, Joseph10, Joseph Moise9, Michel8, Jean Baptiste L’Huitre7, Jean Rene6, Pierre5, Gabriel4, Claude³, Vorle², Maurice¹) “Ada” GOUPIL, b. 10 Aug 1877, Shippagan, New Brunswick, Canada; d. 29 Dec 1965, Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Married to Oliva-Levy MEILLEUR (b. 8 Jan 1875, St. Andrews, Newfoundland; d. 10 Dec 1967, St. Clair Shores, Macomb County, Michigan; son of Lévis MEILLEUR and Auxilda DAOUST) on 24 Oct 1898 in Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan. Children of Marie Florida “Ada” GOUPIL and Oliva-Levy MEILLEUR:

1. Florence MEILLEUR, b. 6 Feb 1902, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 23 Oct 1918, Chicago, Illinois.

2. Raymond MEILLEUR, b. 1904, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 1957, Michigan. Married to Anne UNKNOWN.

3. Vincent Emmanuel MEILLEUR, b. 23 May 1906, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 24 Apr 1991, Mt. Pleasant, Isabella County, Michigan. Married to Dorothy Emeleen WILSON.

4. Marie Agnes MEILLEUR, b. 24 Mar 1910, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 2 Jun 1977, St. Clair Shores, Macomb County, Michigan. Married to William HARCOURT. Twin to Charles.

5. Charles L. MEILLEUR, b. 24 Mar 1910, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 12 Oct 1998, Oakland, Oakland County, Michigan. Married to Leona UNKNOWN.

6. William J. MEILLEUR, b. 4 Nov 1915, Munising, Michigan; d. 14 Jan 2001, Oakland, Oakland County, Michigan.

Notes for Marie Florida “Ada” GOUPIL: Ada met her husband while working for her parents at their hotel in Grand Marais. She was naturalized a US citizen in 1946. Their oldest daughter, Florence, decided to join a convent at the age of 16. But an outbreak of Spanish Flu ended her life before she could complete her novitiate. Marie Florida appears in most records as Ada.

Notes for Oliva-Levy MEILLEUR: Appears in his Social Security death record as “Joseph MEILLEUR,” a name he sometimes went by. Oliva had a twin brother, Joseph-Yvon, that probably died as an infant. He preferred the name “Levi,” and had his name legally changed when he was naturalized in 1946. Levi worked as a lumberjack in Grand Marais, and also owned a bar there. He moved his family by horse and sled in the winter of 1916 to Munising, where he worked in a paper mill. In 1920, Levi moved his family to Detroit, where he took a job at a gas company and worked there until his retirement.

Louise M. (Marguerite11, Joseph10, Joseph Moise9, Michel8, Jean Baptiste L’Huitre7, Jean Rene6, Gabriel5, Pierre4, Claude³, Vorle², Maurice¹) GOUPIL, b. August 1881, New Brunswick, Canada; d. 1960, Grand Marais, Michigan. Married to William B. KERRIGAN (b. Mar 1872, Canada; d. 1949, Grand Marais, Michigan) in 1902, Grand Marais, Michigan. Children of Louise M. GOUPIL and William B. KERRIGAN:

1. Alice G. KERRIGAN, b. June 1906, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK. Adopted daughter.

2. Marie N. KERRIGAN, b. 1915, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. prob. bef. 1930, Michigan.

Notes for Louise M. GOUPIL: It appears that Louise and her family followed her sister, Ada MEILLEUR, and her family as they migrated across Michigan. On the 1910 US Census, they are found in Grand Marais with their adopted daughter, Alice (daughter of Louise’s sister, Margarite). In 1920, Louise and William are living in Munising. This record indicates that they were both naturalized in 1905. They are found living in Detroit in 1930, and both of their children have left the household (Marie has presumably died, as she would have been only fifteen years old at this time). William KERRIGAN is also found before their marriage, on the 1900 US Census, living in Grand Marais as a “boarder” in the household of Ambrose and Mary PEARSALL and working as a “salesman.” This record indicates that his parents were Irish immigrants to Canada, and that William came to Canada in 1881.

Arthur J.12 (Marguerite11, Joseph10, Joseph Moise9, Michel8, Jean Baptiste L’Huitre7, Jean Rene6, Gabriel5, Pierre4, Claude³, Vorle², Maurice¹) GOUPIL, b. June 1892, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. 1953, Grand Marais, Michigan. Married to Gertrude L. UNKNOWN (b. 1894, Michigan; d. UK, prob. Grand Marais, Michigan) in 1926, Grand Marais, Michigan. Children of Arthur J. GOUPIL and Gertrude L. UNKNOWN:

1. Rudolph A. GOUPIL, b. 1929, Grand Marais, Michigan; d. UK.

Notes for Arthur J. GOUPIL: Arthur is buried next to his parents in Holy Rosary Cemetery in Grand Marais, Alger County, Michigan. Arthur’s wife, Gertrude, is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grand Marais. Also buried there is a Minnie S. GOUPILLE, but her relationship to the family is unknown.
