Dear Janet.
Since the post is 18 mo old I'll keep the note short to see if you get it 1st. There were several notes written on this couple on the Goings Geneology Forum about 10 years ago. Also several paragraphs on Gowen Research Foundation. David is listed in the 1810 and 1820 censuses of Virginia with the spelling of the last name clearly Goings. Although he was living in those censuses in Giles/Montgomery County I have never seen anything say he was born there.
As regards Melungeon roots, I have read most of the papers on this and the theory the 1st Goings etc came from Africa, Angola. Goings, and all permutations of spelling, is a common name in people of mixed races living in the Appalachian Mountains. That does not mean that all people of that name are of Melungeon heritage. Many Goings etc came from Europe, chiefly England.
