Leah,
My mother's maiden name is Gold. My Grandfather Harry Gold migrated from Russian when he was a little boy. I believe this was early 1900's. He was of the Jewish religion. I believe his name was changed to Harry Gold from Michael Galatie from customs. My grandfather and grandmother resided in N.J. most of their lives. My family resided in Phila. Pa. Hope this helps
