I realize that your posting is over 6 years old so you have probably completed most, if not all, of your research but I thought I’d add some additional information for any future genealogists researching this family.
Andrew Gold b.1842 d.1900 was the lawful son of George Gold b.1814 d.1893 and Mary Halliday b.1815
Andrew Gold and Janet Smith married in 1870 in Carluke and had three children: George b.1870 d.1893; William b.1872 d.1872; Archibald b.1873 d.1873. As you can see the later two died as infants. According to George’s death records he died “single”.
The 1871 Census shows that Andrew, Janet and their first son George lived with Janet’s mother (Margaret Smith) in Carluke.
After Janet’s death in 1877, Andrew entered into a second relationship with Alice Quin.
The 1881 Census shows Andrew Gold & Alice Quin as being unmarried. The household consisted of George (10yrs), Alice (2yrs) and Andrew (1yrs)
Andrew and Alice Quin married in 1886 in Cambusnethan; however the marriage records are incorrectly indexed as Alice’s last name is indexed as “Queen”.
The 1891 Census shows Andrew & Alice living in Wishaw. The household consisted of Benjamin (9yrs), Catherine (4yrs), Sarah (2yrs) and William Dorman (Lodger)
The 1901 Census lists Alice Gold as a Widow. The household consisted of Benjamin (19), Sarah (12) and Agnes (8)
There is more (marriages, deaths, etc.), but hey! it wouldn’t be any fun if I gave it all away ;-)
Now you are probably asking yourself how I fit into all of this… well, I am a descendant of Thomas Halliday Gold b.~1849 d.1926 who, in addition to Andrew b.1842, was the lawful son of George Gold b.1814 and Mary Halliday b.1815. My Grandfather, Arthur Gold b.1888, was the lawful son of Thomas Halliday Gold and Agnes French Blackley. In the early 1900’s, Arthur Gold b.1888 followed his older brother George Gold b.1880 from Strathaven, Scotland to Nanaimo, BC, Canada where they were both coal miners. During this time, a number of my grandfather’s cousins also moved to Vancouver Island including George Archibald Gold, Mary Ann Gold and John Gold. It is also my understanding that a few cousins also moved to the United States as my father (Arthur N. Gold) recalls meeting his American cousins when he was younger. I am now in the process of researching the American connection.
I hope anyone researching this family finds this information useful.
Arthur R. Gold
