Hello Erin and Happy Thanksgiving,

It’s great to hear from you... Wow, the third cousins are just flying out of the woodwork. This is more fun than a 100,000 piece puzzle…Graham and I had lunch just the other week in Vancouver and have been conversing back and forth ever since…in fact I’m just in the process of documenting all of my source material so that Graham can include them with his own genealogy research. Ironically, just the other day I was reviewing John Gold’s 1915 WWI draft record which describes him as a brick layer and single. I in turn also have a copy of his 1980 death record which also describes him as a brick layer and single. I guess John never married.

I also have a copy of William Allan Gold’s (John’s bother) 1918 WWI draft record which describes him as an automobile mechanic and single. The interesting thing with William Allan’s WWI draft record is that it lists his next of kin as being his father Robert Gold who by the looks of things was living with his son William at 621 Toronto St. in Winnipeg, MB… Do you know if Robert moved to Canada to live with William? I can send you .pdf copies of the documents if you don’t already have them.

Anyways, as you know, our genealogy gets rather confusing when every second person is named Andrew, George, Archibald, Mary or “John”… It get’s even more confusing when brother’s marry sisters as Archibald Gold b.~1842 d.1900 married Elizabeth Russell b.1848 d.? and John Gold b.~1853 d.? married Henrietta Russell (Elizabeth’s sister). To add further confusion two brother married Allan’s… George Gold b.~1846 d.1918 married Christina Allan b.1851 d.1903 and Robert Gold b.~1851 d.? married Margaret Allan b.1855 d.1899… phew, I’m confused already and I haven’t even started to talk to the next generation…

Here’s what I know of Robert Gold and Margaret Allan:

Robert Gold b.~1851 d.? married Margaret Allan b.~1855 d.1899 in 1874 in the Parish of Cambusnethan in the County of Lanark, Scotland.

My records show that Robert and Margaret had 10 children:
- George Gold b.1874 d.1876 (died at 1yrs)
- Alexander Gold b.1876
m.~1875 to Katie Innes
- Robert Gold b.1878
- Agnes Graham Gold b.1881 d.1888 (died at 7yrs)
- Mary Ann Gold b.1883 d.1972 (moved to Nanaimo, BC)
- George Gold b.1885
- William Allan Gold b.1890 (moved to Winnipeg, MB)
- John Gold b.1896 d.1980 (moved to Nanaimo, BC)
- Gavin Allan Gold b.1895
- Agnes Graham Gold b.1898 d.1899 (died at 0yrs)

Beyond this I know little about your branch of the family so I would be very interested in collaborating and sharing notes… I would also love to learn more about the family in Calgary and learn about any genealogy research they have done.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and we’ll talk to you soon.

Arthur R. Gold
