The Michael Gold b. circa 1758 Sheffield, Eng does seem to have NC connections. Michael was living on the Enoree river in Union County, SC in the 1790's. Union Co. is on the NC border and was still the frontier at the time. The census records of his sons indicate they were in SC or NC - possibly they were not sure. Michael's brother was David Gold and his son Thomas married William Holland. There is a David Gold KIA and a William Holland in Capt. Howell Tatum's Company of the 6th NC Infantry (sometimes listed as the 1st NC). They are on the Valley forge muster roll. There is a Michael Gold on the 8th VA muster roll at Valley Forge although there is no record of our Michael residing in VA. It is strongly believed but not definitively proven that these men listed on the Valley Forge muster rolls are the same men in our family lineage.
Michael also appears to have a brother or possibly father John Gold who remained in the Union Co., SC - Rutherford/Lincoln Co., NC area at least until 1810.
Ray Gold, a longtime researcher of this family, had a DNA test done for the our paternal Gold line. Sadly, Ray has passed away; but the data can be found on the Gold DNA project page under y-results. If there are known male Golds in your line please encourage one of them to join the project.
