The Daniel Gold that opperated the Ferry across the Dan River was Daniel Gold 1734-1793. He was son of Daniel Gold 1708-? and father of Daniel Gold 1769-1847 of N.C.. It is highly possible that the river was named for one of the two older Daniels.
The L.D.S. church has a copy of Gold Generations in America by Daniel Pleasents Gold and a copy of The Gold Family by Fred and Peter D. Gold. I copied pages from them. Unfortunatly those two sources are a little different and miss that proper age and date of death of Daniel of N.C., they are a good place to start but I would suggest you recheck what they have done as I am in the process of doing.
