My grandfather was Robert Lee Goldston, son of Andrew Jackson Goldston and I am 73 and live in Winston-Salem.My Uncle Hugh Goldston owned and operated Goldston's Beach, White Lake, NC.He was very successful and in the early twenties my grandfather leased another nearby beach resort (McDowells Beach)about a mile from my Uncle Hugh's place and my father and his brothers worked there during the summer.I don't think this worked except for one summer, but I remember Uncle Hugh.He left his estate to two nephews, about my age, but at the moment I can't think of their names.
We often visited the old Goldston home place on Bear Creek when I was a child.I think my cousin, Jimmie Goldston, Wake Forest, NC still owns the land.A few years ago I visited the old home place... the remains of the house was the crumbling brick foundation and the fields I remember as a youngster is now a forest of pines.I found the old cemetary that was near the house, down toward the creek, where some of the original Goldstons are buried.
My dad often spoke of Johnny & Herbet Goldston, widely known in the 20's-30's as the Goldston Brothers, Twin Auctioneers. There is probably information about them on the web, somewhere, I haven't searched.
Dad also told an interesting story about two of his cousins who turned up millionaires in Texas in the 30's.It seems one of the brothers moved to Texas from Goldston and was the very successful founder and owner of a very profitable drilling equipment company. He then sent his younger brother to college in the mid-west where he got an engineering degree in mining. After graduation, he joined his brother in Texasand in several months had decided on a site which he thought had oil.; but his brother wouldn't finance it, claimed oil was too speculative and wanted to stay in the equipment business. His younger brother decided he was going to go back to Goldston, NC, and when he arrived there was a telegram from his older brother saying to come back to Texas, he would finance his oil lease and drilling... and sure enough, they struck oil.I think in the 1950's they flew their private jet to Southern Pines airport and attended a Goldston family reunion.
I attended Wake Forest College 1948-50 and UNC 19950-52.Both of my daughters have graduate degrees from UNC.Beth, who is 40, is Wilkes County Health Dept director.Jerri is a dietician in Mount Airy.
Since myretirement in 1991 I developed a little business operating from my home at www.farmalarm.com
