My great, great, great grandfather may be John Gollan who married Janet Fletcher in Nairn, 1809. I'm sure that I'm descended from the James Gollan, blacksmith who married Margaret Adams in Nairn, 1844, ....but who were James' parents?
The 1841 Nairn census on fiche at Inverness, shows James Gollan, Blacksmith aged 20, in Seatown, Nairn with John Gollan, 10, and Janet Gollan, 40. Next house, James Fletcher, 60, ?? Fletcher (female),70, and John Reid, blacksmith, 20.
1851 census shows James, blacksmith, 35 with Margaret, 38 Duncan,4 and James 1. My great, great grandfather was George, yet to be born, in Forres, in 1857.
I was thrown by the ages in the 1841 census but there is a clue in that they have all been rounded! Someone was cutting corners. James was probably 25 when the census was done. Born in 1815, he could then be the son of Janet and John! The next door Fletchers ..perhaps Janet's elder brother and mother, are a further clue.
What do you think?
