Thank you Eileen for your information regarding the Scottish naming protocol. I suspected there was one.

With regard to Janet / Jessie in the William Gollan family I am researching, according to the passenger list, Janet was actually born in Scotland before they emigrated. She was 8 months old in December 1838. I only found out that she was part of the family last weekend when I received a copy of the passenger list, and have yet to do my searches.

Once in Australia they had another daughter and according to the Births, Deaths and marriages records of NSW she was born in the Shoalhaven district of NSW in 1843. She them Married John Monaghan in 1867.

Female children are very difficult to research due to the name change at marriage. If you add the other common names (Janet/Jessy/Jessie etc) all refering to the same person together with record quality, it can become very difficult.

Thank you for your assistance, it is much appreciated.
