Sorry, but all of my family is from the central valley in California as far as I know. Most came through San Francisco. There is a site called which gives origins of names. Gong means river, or at least the way my name is written in chinese.( it looks like the letter 'I' with three dashes on the left of it) There may be variations, so you may want to check out this site. It was hard to be Chinese in the US at that time, and it may have been a little easier to get around with a name that didn't sound so Chinese (just speculation).
