I have a special interest in Nat Gonella. I followed his career from the time I became interested in jazz in Southampton UK. I also knew my father was acquainted with him. In the 70's whilst I was living in Holland, I visited a pub where he was playing, he having revived "Oh Mona" there. We chatted for a while during the break, and we talked about people we knew in the Southampton UK jazz scene.
I knew his wife was once an usherette in the Odeon Cinema in Southampton, and he mentioned her. Especially, when I requested a number for the next session. It was "I'm Confessin'" and he said that was his wife's favourite.
When the band re-started, they played "Confessin'" with the other guest for the night Buddy Tate (ex Basie band) taking a solo on flute. I always thougth this was especially for me. I suppose it was!
Some years later, I was talking to my cousin from Southampton, and she told me that Nat was a relation of mine. His wife (I dont remember her name) was my grandmother's cousin.
What a pity I didnt know this when I met him in Holland.
