Our Spanish Ancestor
Even though I have never completed my Gonzalez lineage,it seems almost a given that the original ancestor in America is Emanuel Gonsales-duk. There were supposedly three brothers Gonsales who came at the same time-Peter ,Manuel and Richard but,I have never heard of any descendants of Richard or Peter. Emanuel apparently had lived in the Lowlands for some time for he was in the company of the Dutch in New York and seemed to have connections with them. He arrived in America about 1689 four years after the Edict of Nantes was revoked by King Louis of France. The Spanish had taken over the Netherlands in 1506, and they tried to counteract the Protestant Reformation which spread like wildfire beginning 1517. It would be interesting to know how Emanuel and his family fit into this historical scene.
My branch of this family more or less begins in New York about 1800. Peter Gonzolley, as my family spelled the name, was perhaps the son of Benjamin Gonzolley and his first wife Elizabeth Kuykendal who were of the Minisink area. Peter went to Phelps ,Ontario Co., New York by 1826 and married Abigail Faunce, before this date probably. Peter was a man of great energy and he moved again, to Geauga Co.,Ohio. He went to a meeting of Joseph Smith's group and was so impressedthat he joined the Mormon movement in 1836. At this point his whereabouts become confused. His daughter Caroline was found in the 1840 census of Hancock County, Illinois. Nauvoo is located in Hancock Co. Joseph Smith was killed in 1844 and Peter and his wife went to Jo Daviess, Co. Illinois with their family and are found in the 1850 census, but after that Peter disappears at age 50. He perhaps went to Texas ,where a Peter somewhat of his description appears in Stephens Co. with a new wife and family. Any information that anyone has to offer about Peter and his family would be appreciated.Carmelita Kammann
