The Gunsaulus Mystery - film by Micheaux
In the 1995 book "Blacks in Black and White: a Source Book on Black Films", author Henry Sampson refers to a film "The Gunsaulus Mystery" made in 1921 by director Oscar Micheaux. In the book, there is a picture of the lobby card for the movie. It was an eight-reel film "based on a famous murder case which occurred in Georgia in 1915.It involved Leo Frank, a Jew, who was convicted of killing a young white girl and later lynched by a mob near Marietta, Georgia.Micheaux hoped that the large coverage this case was given in the white and black press would guarantee good business at the box office."
Apparently this film no longer exists; however, Micheaux did a remake called "Lem Hawkins' Confession."There is no indication in this book as to who the "Gunsaulus" of the mystery was.
It would be interesting to read contemporary press accounts - any ideas how to find them?
