Dear Wendy, There does appear to be a fairly large group of Gonsalus descendents. I presume that I am a descendent of Samuel and Elizabeth Van Vliet Gonsalus. I have a lineage chart on Elizabeth from Ann Johnson and I could probably get more on the net. Elizabeth was the child of Ary Van Vliet and Helena Rosecrans. Ary's father Jan was from Utrecht ,Holland.
I do not have anything on the immigration of the Gonsalus family or their exact place of embarcation from Europe. If the history of the Spanish Netherlands is followed, I think this would explain a lot about this group who were undoubtedly originally a Gonzalez family of Spain.
As far Samuel being a Tory , that is an absolute fabrication. He was a rabid revolutionary and his pranks,I believe, were misunderstood by those who wished to misunderstand them. There is some material on Samuel in Philip Smith's " Legends of the Shawangunk" printed by Syracuse Press in 1965.
If I can help in some additional way, I would be happy to do so. I do not have any original documentation and , in fact, I had trouble with the family history as my ancestress was called Caroline Gonzolley. I finally got onto the name change and that helped.Carmelita Kammann
