James,
I,too, think I'm related to Sam Gonsalus but a lot is missing to prove that. I do know that I am a descendent of Peter and Abigail Faunce Gonsalus.Peter was born in New about 1799 and was probably the son of a Benjamin Gonsalus. Peter was in Phelps, (todays Ontario County) New York by at least 1820.After Peter's marriage to Abigail circa 1821-24 they went to Geauga County ,Ohio and joined the Mormon movement in the Huntsburg area. Peter was listed on a 1840 Geauga census. For the next 10 years things are sketchy, but we do know that Peter's daughter and my ancestor Caroline Manzer had two children between 1843-48 in Hancock County, Illinois. This is the county of Nauvoo. In 1850 Peter and Abigail are listed in Jo Daviess, Illinois. I do not know Peter'exact birth, marriage or death date. I don't know if you have anything that might shed light on Peter.
I an very interested in the location os the Gonsalus house in the Hudson Valley and in your information that they stored New York documents. I am interested in anything actually that fills in family information.
Anne Stofer's materials are indeed helpful and I have communicated with her. At the Salt Lake Library the researchers I wrote had no success in the Peter link to his parentage. Hope to hear from you.
