John M. Good of Carlisle, Pennsylvania
Posted by: Terry Good (ID *****2118) Date: July 10, 2010 at 21:05:25
  of 2039

John M. Good was born about 1816 somewhere in Pennsylvania. I have been unable to identify his parents. About 1842 he married Mary/Maria, probably in Pennsylvania. From this union were born four children, Hiram John ( April 1843 ), Anna Marie ( February 16, 1846 ), John J. { February 15, 1849 ), and Emma E. (about 1850 ). I have been unsuccessful in searching for genealogical information on Mary/Maria.

In response to my request for assistance, the Cumberland County Historical Society in Carlisle, PA was able to provide me with additional information on John M. Good. John is listed on the registry of the Cumberland County Almshouse for the years 1888, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, (not 1894) and 1895. The CCHS researcher indicated that the record keeping of the almshouse left something to be desired on occasion. It appears that John admitted himself in 1888 and was probably widowed at that point, the marital state that was listed for him on the subsequent annual registry entries.

A registry entry for 1895 states, " Paralysis - Brain Apoplexy. John M. Good, age 80, white, hospital case. Died February 12th, 1895. Taken away by daughter."

The CCHS researchers found no John M. Good in the Will Index, no John M. or Mary/Maria Good in their Church or Cemetery index, no obituary for either person, nor any probate records for either of them. They concluded that if he was living in the Almshouse hospital "it is likely most of his assets would have been passed down or sold before this point."

My previous research has found the family on PA censuses for 1850 (Cumberland County - misinterpreted as "Gord"), 1860 (Cumberland County), 1870 (Adams County), and 1880 (Cumberland County).

I have a fair amount of information on this Good line as it descends from one of the sons, Hiram. It is the line going back from John and Mary/Maria that has me stymied.

Any assistance would be appreciated.
