I'm replying to a post from December 2001.
I finally found the town of Goodar. It is a small town in Goodar Township, Ogemaw County, Michigan. They did not say but I would assume it is safe to say that Goodar is named after Charles Goodar ... maybe that is where his lumber camp is.
Could Charles be a younger brother of Francis?
Per the county Historian:
The township of Goodar was orrigionally set-off as part of Rose Twp. when the County was set aside in 1840.
Charles Goodar received a timber contract from the sage & McGraw Lumber Companyin 1878 and Mr. Goodar started the first lumber camp in the area. In 1888, the area was broken away from Rose Twp and formed into Goodar Twp. At this time, Charles Goodar was appointed as Justice of the Peace.
Mr. Goodar died July 29, 1889 and was buried at Goodar Twp. Cemetery in South Branch (also known as Oak Grove). His tombstone states that he was born in 1812.
Charles Goodar came from Saginaw, leaving his family there to forge his name into Ogemaw history.
