My grandmother was born in 1903(?) or thereabouts, in Walkern, Hertfordshire. Her name was Annie Goodchild, and she had a brother named Fred, who was killed in the First World War. Her parents names I have forgotten. My grandmother told me, and I do believe this is correct, that her mother left the family home when Annie was quite young, leaving her in the care of her father. Her mother, on the other hand, took up with a London cab driver whose family name was Perry. They remained unmarried, but out of this union was born my grandmother's young stepsister named Peggy Goodchild-Perry. I have a photograph of Peggy (maybe her real name was Elizabeth but I only heard her referred to as Peggy). They lived in London, which is where my grandmother also lived from the age of 14 years. She told me she had two male cousins (Goodchilds) who walked from Hertfordshire to Surrey (I may be wrong here) and set up a coffin-making establishment and were successful. She also told me that one of her relatives was a producer for the BBC - the name escapes me. My grandmother's married name was Annie Hodsdon. There is something about the name "Piner" that is oddly familiar and could have been mentioned in our home. My grandmother died in 1985 in London, having lived in South London all her adult life - mostly the Lewisham and Peckham area. The family still lives in London.
