The book--Wings of Morning
I wonder if many of you know about the book written by a Goodner cousin about his uncle, another Goodner cousin.Howard Goodner, of Bradley Co., TN, was the radioman in the last bomber shot down over Germany during World War II.His nephew, Thomas Childers, a professor of history at the U. of Pennsylvania, researched the conflicting information given to the family and solved the family mystery of exactly what happened to Howard and other crew members of the plane. It is a fascinating story, which is very well researched and written.Using his book as a guide, we found the crash site near Regensburg.A simple cross was erected at the site by the German inhabitants of the area.A plaque with the names of the crew members was on the cross, but just the year before we visited, it had obviously been stolen. The mayor of the town, to whom we talked before going to the site, warned us that the plaque had been stolen, so it wouldn't be a surprise to us when we got there.Just thought some of you might like to know about it.
