I believe the french spelling was Goodreau or Gaudreau. I know that when I find my family in census records I find these spellings: Goodro, Goodroe, and Goodrow which is how our line ended spelling it. It's possible that the census taker wrote the name how it sounded to him/her at the time. That would account for why one family ended up with three different census spellings over the years.
My Goodrow family is French-Canadian, coming over the Canadian border into upstate NY: Champlain, Malone, Altona then down to Schenectady, NY.
