Ancestry of Jacob & Mary Googe Owens
Following is information I have gathered regarding the ancestry of Jacob Owens and Mary Googe Owens of Pike County, MS.I am hoping this will lead to people correcting erroneous data posted in on-line trees and perhaps stimulate others to renew the search for answers and share data they have accumulated.
First let me say I know of no hard evidence that Jacob OWENS was the son of Captain Jonathan OWEN of Edgefield County, SC.This assertion seems to have originated in old DAR applications. If anyone has any proof of or support for the assertion that this Jacob is the Jacob Owen listed in Jonathan’s 1808 Edgefield County Will would you please share it with everyone on the forum. Also any data regarding the other listed children of Jonathan would be appreciated.
What I do know for certain about our Jacob Owen is that he resided in Barnwell District, SC between 1810 and 1817.He appears on the 1810 Census of Barnwell District aged between 26-44 along with wife Mary Googe Owen (age 26-44) and two daughters under ten years of age.Jacob was undoubtedly much closer in age to 26 than 44.Although Barnwell District is situated only two counties away from Edgefield, it is more than likely that Jacob is connected with the extensive OWENS family of Barnwell County rather than the Jonathan Owen family of Edgefield. There is just not enough data to draw a conclusion one way or the other, so barring other data, I think including Jacob as son of Jonathan in on-line trees is premature.
One other point that should be mentioned is that Jacob moved to Pike County, Mississippi between 1817 and 1820, not much earlier as asserted in Conerly’s book.
Deed records in Barnwell District prove that the Jacob of Barnwell is the man who moved to Pike County and shed much light on Mary Googe’s family.I apologize for not including Deed Book numbers and pages but I am working from scanned prints from microfilm and the notations are on the backs of the pages (which I failed to scan and are now in storage!)The references can easily be obtained from the Deed Index microfilm available through the Family History Library.Following are excerpts:
Deed 1
“Know all men by these presents that we Esther Googe and Susanah Googe of the District of Barnwell in the state aforesaid in consideration of the sum of Forty dollars to us in hand paid by Jacob Owens of the same place have granted bargain sell and release unto the said Jacob Owens all that plantations or tract of land containing ninety acres being our equal dividend of a tract granted to our natural Father John Googe situate on a small branch of Jacksons Branch waters of Big Saltketcher...”
(signed) 12 Oct 1810(recorded) 5 Aug 1811
Deed 2
“This indenture made the 27th day of September 1815 Between William Loper of Barnwell District State of South Carolina of the one part and Jacob Owens of Barnwell District Blacksmith of the other part witness that for and in consideration of the sum of three hundred five dollars paid by the said Owens...a certain tract of land granted to Marebah Boynton...is conveyed to the said Jacob Owens containing one hundred and two acres more or less.”
Deed 3
“This indenture made the (cut-off) day of February 1817 between Jacob Owens of the above district Planter of the first part and William Ellis Planter of Beaufort District the other part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of twelve hundred dollars good and lawful money of this state to the said Jacob Owens in hand by the said William Ellis have bargained sold and delivered by these presents...all that tract or plantation of land containing one hundred and thirty five acres being part of a tract of land granted to Jno Goode (sic) 5 day of January 1795 and fell to the said Jacob Owens by heirship purchasing two dividends of the original tract situated on so side of Jacksons Branch...also one tract of land granted to Meribay Bryanton for one hundred and two acres the 16th August 1787 on the South side Jacksons Branch and adjoining the aforesaid tract...(signed) 4 January 1817)
MARY OWENS released Dower rights 2 December 1817
These documents tell us that John Googe died in Barnwell District by 12 October 1810 (possibly much earlier) and that he had at least three daughters, Esther and Susannah (both single at that time) and Mary who had married Jacob Owens. Each of the three girls inherited 45 acres of a 300 acre tract granted to John on 5 January 1795 (this grant is on file at the SC Archives).Jacob bought Esther and Susannah’s share, giving him a total of 135 acres, and later bought an adjoining 102 acres, all of which he sold to William Ellis in early 1817 (undoubtedly in preparation for his move to Mississippi).
In a separate post I will go through what I know of the first generations of the Googe Family of Barnwell District. There are many puzzles. But at least we have a positive identification of the father of Mary Googe Owens and two of her sisters.
