I'm sure that many Goolsby's have excelled in sports as we seem to be an athletic people...so I want you to know of a sports figure from the early days of college football; His name was James Earl Goolsby (nickname was "Shag"). He was born in 1917 to John Earl Goolsby and Vallie Elder Goolsby of Tippah Co, Miss.; As a little boy he developed infantile paralysis, an illness that might have crippled him for life...instead he excelled in highschool football, paying both on offense and defense(offensive center/defensive linebacker) for S.D.Lee High School in Columbus,Miss. during the eary 1930's; Shag played well enough to get a scholarship to Miss. State University where he became one of that school's very best players; He was an all SEC player on both offense and defense and was the Captain of State's 1939 team (he is pictured holding the Golden Egg Trophy after State defeated Ole Miss in 1939); Shag also played a year of pro ball before entering the army.
James E.Goolsby would later serve as Superintendent of the Columbus Public School System from 1960 until his untimely death in 1975; He was only 58 years old.
In 1975 his name was enshrined in the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame.
He was my Father.

James Earl Goolsby (Jr.)
Caledonia, Miss.
