In Reply to: Jackson Co., TN - Robert & Judith Goolsby (esp 1870 census) by Karen Stratton of 890

Robert M. Goolsby & Judith Patterson Goolsby were my 3rd Great Grandparents. They were also My 3rd Great Grand Uncle and Aunt since Robert was also a Uncle to my 2nd Great Grandfather who married his daughter. They were 1st cousins. (Confusing isn't it!)

Robert M. had 2 Brothers Isham David and Francis Marion (F.M.) Goolsby. F.M. Goolsby married Martha Jane Kirby in Davidson Co in 1862.(see Note below) She was probably the mother of your Mary Kirby Stratton. Which would have made William Stratton his (Francis Goolsby's) step grandchild. (He may have been Martha's 2nd husband after H. W. Kirby died in 1853).

*note. Francis may have married Martha Jane Kirby Jr. (Mary Ann Stratton's sister) This would have made William Stratton his nephew. If you have any info on which Martha he married I would appreciate it. Also if you have birth & death dates for this family it might help to figure out which he married.

Francis was a lawyer and had quiet a lot of money. He was inclined to help all of his relatives of which Mary Ann was included. This may not explain the reason that Mary's 10 yr old son was living with Robert M & Judith but it does explain the connection. If you find out more please let me know since I am researching this line of my family.

I did find in the chancery court documents of Jackson county that Mary Stratton vs Hartwell Stratton was filed in 1859.

Who did Mary Ann re-marry?

Did she die giving birth to William? The 1870 census lists him as age 10 and if she died in 1860 that would have been the same year that she divorced, gave birth, re-married and then died. A lot to happen to one person in the same year.

Could she possibly have remarried one of Robert & Judith Sons? They have Lindrop, Alvin & John H. all living at home in 1870. That would possibly explain why he is in the household.

Let me know what you find.
