Surely we are first cousins as I have already posted to your query on the Burton forum!

Yes, Samuel Goolsby was killed in a mining accident. It was in 1910. There was an explosion at Palos Mine NO. 3. The article from the Birmingham Age Herald Sunday May 6, 1910 was headlined, "Greatest Mine Explosion in History of State Cost Many Men Their Lives".

Samuel was a rural mail carrier to the mines and justice of the peace in Porter. He was walking on the track in front of the mine 200 feet away from the opening when the explosion occurred. He was knocked 30 feet into the river and was horribly burned and mangled. He was killed instantly. I had always heard from Granny (his daughter, Gladys Mae Goolsby), that there was nothing buried in his coffin except a finger with a string tied around it. The story was that his wife had tied the string on his finger to remind him of something and that was how she ID-ed him. Don't know how true that is, but some old timers I have met at the cemetery where he is buried have confirmed that's what is widely believed. His wife was Georgiana E. Cooper. I have a photo of Samuel and Georgiana.

I have a good deal of info on the Goolsby's. My oldest daughter, youngest two daughters and I do Civil War reenacting so I have done a lot of research on this line during the Civil War. Samuel's father served the CSA with the Alabama 28th Infantry Co D. He had two brothers who served with him. I will be happy to share what I have.
