Doug, since you are working a generation back, I thought I'd send you my notes on that generation.

John Dunaway, b. ca. 1795 GA; d. after 1860 Forsyth Co., GA; m. first? 15 Mar
1815 Spartanburg Co., SC, to
Mary Guthrie; m. second? 20 Dec 1820 Jones Co., GA, to
Elizabeth Kelly?, b. ca. 1797 SC; d. after 1870 Forsyth Co., GA; children: Wm. F., John J., Henry, Robert, George, Elizabeth Nancy Lamb.
Notes for John & Elizabeth Dunaway:
(1) The above Spartanburg marriages and wives were found on the LDS IGI Source Call No. 0454228 for Elizabeth Kelly, and, LDS IGI Source Call No. ? for Mary Guthrie. These have not be substantiated by me yet.

Dunaway, Henry; age 16; b. GA. (Living with Kenmores and Wm. Ayres and J. E. Cole)

[Question: Which family is William F. Dunaway’s? On the above 1850 Wm. is not listed because he was probably married by then. On the one below Wm. is listed, but, his sister Elizabeth is ten years off in age from that which we have determined to date, and, Wm’s son John W. is too old to be a son. The last three children I don’t recognize as children of John & Elizabeth. All other censi with Elizabeth, the mother, has her born in SC. The 1850 below has her born in GA.

Your Mary E. is a sister to my GGrandfather John W. Dunaway,b.July 18, 1863 was married to Artimissa Martin on Oct 25, 1885 in Hall Co., Ga. John and Mary's parents were William F. (b.1826, Walton Co., Ga.) and Nellie Jane Dunaway(b. about 1826 in Ga.)(I don't have a maiden name for Nellie Jane). William's parents were Jonathan W. Dunaway(b. c. 1795 Ga., d. c. 1865 Forsyth Co., Ga.) and Elizabeth Dennis(b.c. 1800 S.C., d. c. 1875, probably Forsyth Co., Ga.). According to what John W. told my father (John's grandson) William left for the war and never returned. I have not been able to determine which co. he joined. There were a number of Williams that served from Ga. John W. had a son named Truman Frank b. June 1895 in Forsyth Co., Ga. There was also a Truman Frank born to John J. and Luniska Susan Goolsby Dunaway in c. 1855. John J. was a brother to William F. Dunaway.
I hope this was helpful to you in your search. There are not many Dunaways. My father said his Grandfather John W. told him that his ancestor and a brother stowed away on a ship when they were 12 and 14 years of age and were not discovered until it was too late to turn around. He said they came from England. (I don't know about this.)
Anyway, if I can be of any more help please let me know.

Jim Streitelmeier on GenForum says:
I saw your posting and thought I would send what little I have on Jonathan Dunaway. Jonathan Dunaway's marriage to Elizabeth Dennis is recorded in Warren County, GA. In Passports of Georgia Governors 1785-1809, Volume 1 page 39 shows Jonathan received a passport to cross the Creek Indian Nation to the Western Territory on 25 Nov 1802. If he used it to go west, he apparently returned. Jonathan appears in Warren County's Tax Digests in 1801 and 1805 and in the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery as a resident of Warren County. I find no mention of Jonathan after the time period 1805 to 1810. In Warren County's Deed Book C page 144 is an inventory dated in 1802 by John Dunaway, who gave his property to Jonathan in return for Jonathan's care of himself and his wife for life. That is pretty strong evidence that Jonathan was probably a son of John. John was apparently a Revolutionary War veteran. He received a 287 ½ acre land grant in Georgia in 1784. The earliest mention of a Dunaway in Georgia that I have seen is the appointment of John to appraise two estates in Wilkes County, GA, in Nov. 1782. Part of Wilkes County was taken to form Warren County a decade later. I suspect that John was a brother of William Dunaway, my wife's ancestor. William received a land grant in 1784 and named Colonel Elijah Clarke as proof of his service. Whatever proof Col. Clarke provided is now lost, but William received the grant based on Col. Clarke's proof of his service. I suspect that John and William both enlisted in Col. Clarke's regiment in North Carolina, possibly Virginia, in 1781 or 1782. After the fall of Charleston, SC, in May 1780, the British conquered Georgia. Col. Clarke fled with most of his regiment to the Carolinas, where they were involved in many of the major battles there. While there, he recruited soldiers, many of whom stayed in GA after the Patriots recaptured the colony. I suspect that John and William were among those who stayed. Right now, I have no leads whatever to John and William before the Revolution. I would love to hear from anyone who has some leads.
