There doesn't seem to be any definitive answer to this one; the speculation seems to be that Bartholomew Gosnold named Martha's Vineyard in honour of both his daughter and an aunt who had helped to fund the expedition. Further to another correspondent, I do not think that Bartholomew was an Admiral (which is a military rank) as he was technically a civilian. His correct rank should probably be Captain.
