Gosnold Family Genealogy Forum

I was born and bred in Otley, Suffolk, the home village of Bartholomew Gosnold. I've spent the last 25 years researching the history of the village. I'm concerned that so many people still refer to Otley Hall as Bartholomew's definitive birthplace and home. Yes, it was the Gosnold family home, but Anthony, Bartholomew's father, lived at Otley High House, not at the Hall. He inherited the High House when his grandfather died. I suspect he was already living there, and that Bartholomew was born there. Anthony sold the High House in 1589 and moved to Grundisburgh. I think it is fair to say that there is no proof that Bartholomew was born at Otley Hall; equally, there is no proof that he was born at the High House. But I submit that on balance, the High House must be the favourite. If you're in the Otley area, do go and view the High House; it's a magnificent building. But please respect the owners' privacy and view only from the road - the house is not open to the public. Does anyone know where Bartholomew lived in Bury St Edmunds?
