David, I am a decendent from Thomas Keene of Maryland and, I too, am searching for absolute documentation of the Gosnold/Keene connection. The only actual documentation that I know is the will of Robert Gosnold (m. Ursula Naunton) dated 15 August 1615 and proved 1 Nov 1615 "Robert Gosnold of Earleshall, county Suffolk, esq. to be buried at Otley near my wife. To Elizabeth Keene, my daughter, the wife of Thomas Keene, L8 a year. To my son Anthony Gosnold my house in Swillon called Eales. To my son Thomas Gosnold L200. To my granson Robert Gosnold all movable goods in the house at Otley, with the horse mill, brewing house, Dayrie goods, etc. To Anthony Gosnold, my grandchild, nowe in Virginia L100, if he shall return in one year after my decease. To Henry Keene my grandchild, L20. To Thomas Keene my grandchild, L20. To my son John Gosnold L500 which he owes me for buying his office at the Court. To John Joanes my house in Otley in occupation of Francis Butterhall. To Anthony my son a piece of ground in Otley now in lease to Daniel Walton. To my executor toward the performance of this will lands I bought of my son John Gosnold untill he pays them L400." Executors son Anthony and Mr. Francis Cornwallis of Earleshall. [Va. Mag. of Hist. and Biography, vol. XIV, pg. 87] This, to the best of my knowlege, is this only documentation linking the two families. Thomas Keene (the grandson of Robert Gosnold) in 1615 would still have been in England, having settled in Maryland in 1631. Though, having a first cousin (Anthony Gosnold) in Virginia could well have been an enticement to come to America. Incidental evidence linking the two families is the use of the names Thomas, Henry, Elizabeth, Ursula ("Ursilla" is found in the Keene/Withers line) Another possibility in positive identification is that the remains of Capt. Gosnold are believed to have been discovered at Jamestown. I read recently that efforts were being made to compare DNA samples between the discovered bones and living Gosnold decendants. We too would have that same DNA. Ah! modern technology! Proving once again that there is more than one way to skin a cat! Please feel free to e-mail me. I think we are both after the truth.
