Mike Goth

Longtime Ventura resident Mike Goth, 58, died Saturday, May 20, 2006, in Fresno, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born June 1, 1947, in Borger, Texas, Mike attended schools in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Shreveport, Louisiana, and Amarillo, Texas and graduated from Tascosa High School in Amarillo in 1965. Mike's lifetime connection with the American Red Cross started in high school where he taught water safety classes. This connection with the American Red Cross in high school would define his career. When Mike's father was transferred to Bartlesville, Mike enrolled in the University of Oklahoma where he received his bachelor's degree in one of the very first graduating classes in Law Enforcement Administration. Summers between his college years found Mike working on tow barges on the Mississippi River, and as a sideline activity, he continued his Red Cross volunteer work. Mike was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, culminating with him being the chapter president his senior year. Many and varied student activities caught Mike's attention in college. These included Sooner Scandals, where he met his future wife Vivian Bell. They were married June 6, 1969. After settling in Ventura, their son Mike Jr. was born in 1973 and daughter Rene in 1976. Beginning his career with the Ventura Police Department in 1969, he worked in almost all areas of the department from the swat team to supervision and retired from the police department in 1991.

Even with the long hours as a police officer, Mike found time to be involved with his family and then the community. As in his college career, many community service activities commanded his attention. He refereed high school and junior college football and baseball, taught classes for the Red Cross, worked the community street festivals and attended his children's sporting and school events. His interest in photography developed over the years, leading to his becoming the unofficial photographer at all family events.

After retiring from law enforcement, he intensified his commitment to the American Red Cross, working the past thirteen years for this organization. Some of his assignments included teaching and participation in disaster recovery operations in many of the major hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and wildfires throughout the country, including the 9/11 tragedy and most recently Hurricane Katrina.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Vivian Goth of Ventura; son Mike Goth, Jr. of Ventura; daughter Rene Goth of San Diego; father Pat Goth of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and his wife Jo; brother Tom Goth of Cincinnati, Ohio, his wife Katie O'Donnell, daughter Meghan, and son Brendan; sister Joan Goth of Norman, Oklahoma and her husband Terry Newkumet; and grandson Michael Edward Goth of Lancaster, CA. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen, in 2000.

Visitation will take place Thursday, May 25th, 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.

Services will take place Friday, May 26, 10:00 A.M. also at Ted Mayr Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made in Mike's name payable to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, and mailed c/o the Ventura County Chapter of the Red Cross at 2355 Portola Road, Ventura, CA 93003.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura.
