Many believe that the name is derived from the French family name: GAUTHIER pronounced with a
'ch' in the middle. If you think about accents & dialects, there's a strong possibilty that this is true. I'm a Yorkshire 'lass' descended from the Gouchers of Cuckney, Nottinghamshire.
