Elston Gouge was the son of John Gouge born 1802 in NC and Nancy McKinney Gouge.Nancy was the daughter of Henry McKinney who died in 1836 in Cole Co MO.Elston married Elizabeth A. Craft 5 May 1864 in Cole Co, MO.He enlisted in Co H, 26th MO Inf at Jefferson City MO on18 Dec 1861 and was mustered out at Little Rock AR in August 1865.His Civil War pension records state that he returned to Cole Co, MO and moved from there to Camden Co MO in November 1868.He died near Stoutland, Camden Co MO Aug 6, 1913.His pension file states that Elizabeth A. Craft, his wife, died 30 Oct 1882 near Montreal, Camden Co, MO.He married Rutha Williams of Cole/Moniteau Co MO on 9 Sep 1883 at the home of William Williams in Cole Co, MO.The marriage license was obtained earlier in Camden Co, MO. The following children were listed in his application dated 9 Apr 1899:Emma Gouge born May 31, 1866, John W. Gouge born Nov 18, 1869, Granville G. Gouge born March 21, 1871, Amanda Gouge born April 17, 1873, Newton C. Gouge born Jan 7, 1875, Laura S. Gouge born March 4, 1878, Florence D. Gouge born Mar 24, 1880 and Ida P. Gouge born April 20, 1885.An earlier statement dated 4 May 1898 lists these same children except the birthdates for Granville, Laura and Florence is the month of May instead of March. Affidavits in the pension file by S. W. McDaniel state that Elston worked for him from 1859 to 1861 and that he lived on an adjoining farm next to him after the war from 1865 to 1869. Sterling W. McDaniel was the husband of Elston's oldest sister, Surreptha Gouge, born 1829.S. W. McDaniel resided near Burdett, Bates Co, MO in Jan, 1889. Elston is described in his medical files as five foot nine inches tall, weighing from 185 to 205 at different times, dark complexion, light hazel/gray eyes and brown hair. His occupation was farmer.
After the death of Elston, his widow, Rutha, filed for his pension. Sons, G. G. Gouge and N. C. Gouge, filed an affidavit dated 18 Sep 1913 listing their address as Stoutland, Camden Co, MO and stated that they attended the funeral of Elisabeth Gouge, first wife of Elston, and verified her date of death as 30 Oct 1882 and they attested to the marriage to Rutha Gouge, his second wife.
Information from Marie Gouge, Springfield, MO dated Aug 1984 says that "Elizabeth Craft Gouge climbed a ladder to put apples out to dry and fell off the ladder. She was pregnant. She lost the baby and she died too."Also included in this letter is some information on William Douglas Craft and his wife Sarah Ann Williams which states that William Douglas Craft was a full blood Cherokee Indian and Sarah Ann Williams Craft was a full blood Onieda Indian. And that William Douglas Craft and Sarah were in Oklahoma and "William Douglas was beating his children and she ask him to stop and he beat worse and she shot him.The people of the community cheered and thru rice on her because they were happy, that he deserved it."It appears that this information was obtained from Florence Coffey. I am not a Craft researcher, but my interpretation of this info is that William Douglas Craft was the father of Elizabeth A. Craft.
Elston Gouge and wife Elizabeth are on the 1880 census in Jackson Twp, Camden Co, MO as E. Goodge.Included in his household are all of the above listed children except Ida. Also listed on the census is a daughter, Sarah, age 11.
