Captain Thomas Gourleys' war chest
April 17, 2002
On March 9, 1855, Thomas Gourley,b. Abt. 1791 d. 1877 applied for any pay that was duehis father, Captain Thomas Gourley for his Revolutionary war service.Thomas Gourley, Jr. appointed Albert G. Graham to be the attorney of record for him on 9 March 1855.(According to my copies of actual documents).
On the next page of the documents, Albert G. Graham on March 16, 1855, states, "that the Gourley family have a miltary chest which belonged to their father, and contains large packages of robes(I think- hard to read writing,)belonging to the Revolutionary service, not only of his(Captain Thomas Gourley's) company, but of Captain's Ducks, Marshalls and other's".
My question is this, does anyone know what happened to this military chest?Does it still reside with a Gourley family member? Are there any photo's of it? What happened to the articles inside?I would think this kind of great family treasure would be somewhere, a museum, private family, whatever.
If anyone knows about the military chest, please get in touch with me.I will really appreciate any help. What a great thrill it would be if all of us Capt. Gourley researchers could just see the contents and the chest.I get a chill just thinking about it!!!!!!!!!!!
