I obtained the information from a very reliable book published in 1930 called John Graddy (1710-1787) of Dobbs and Duplin- With some of his descendants by Benjamin Grady. The book was origionally published in 1930 and has been recently re-printed. You might be able to find the current publisher of the re-publishing over the main search engine on the internet by typing in the name of the book. WHen the Graddy family came over from Ireland the name was first used with only 1 "D" in the name and another "D" was added later. Almost all the Graddys in America are decended from John Graddy who came over from Ireland. I have lots of information on his wife Mary Whitfield also. John Grady born about 1710, some say 1704 died March 12, 1787. He had a brother William Grady born 1716 and died in 1803 married Ann Barfield. These 2 brothers are the 2 Gradys that almost everyone decended from the Grady family is decended from. Their father is William Grady born about 1680 in County Donegal, Ireland died 1737 in Lenoir, North Carolina. HIs father is John Grady and mother is Mary Goodman. The brothers and sisters of William Grady born about 1735-1739 are: Mary Grady married Henry Goodman; John Grady married MIss Moore; Charity Grady married Mr. Herring; Anne Grady married Mr.Croom; Alexander Grady born 1744 died 1821 married Anna Thomas; Frederick Grady (My direct line ancestor) born March 5, 1753 died March 19, 1818 married Elizabeth Durham; Lewis Grady; Elizabeth Grady;married James Outlaw she died Sept 3, 1830 her husband died April 22, 1826; Margaret Grady married Isaac Dawson.
As you can see the Grady clan had several children for several generations, my direct line ancestor Frederick Grady had 12 children who themselves had about 10 children each and a couple of generations after that.I am almost certain that your Lewis Graddy was named after Lewis Grady who was a brother to William Grady who had a son named Lewis who would be the Lewis Graddy you are looking for. Almost everyone that migrated from Tennessee and Kentucky came from North Carolina and Virginia and the Grady clan arrived and settled in North Carolina. I have traced the Whitfield line back to the 1200's let me know if you would like to have some information on the Whitfield line after you have verified that your Lewis Graddy is the son of William Graddy born 1739 in Bertie County, NC and Ann Barfield. I also have lots of information on the Barfield line also as Ann Barfield is decended from my Barfield line.
