The word "di" means of or from. These were attached to the names of those who came to this country in the early 17 and 18 centuries, just as "de" on to the french names which meant of these places or families.You can check with the Italians if you feel that I am wrong or made this up.Anyway, Merry Christmas cousin.Marion
