Graffam from Massachusetts - New York - New Jersey

I was told that my ggfather Joseph H. Graffam (born 1882)was a irish orphan "Phelan" that was adopted by a Sea Capt. Graffam from Holyoke, Massachusetts. He later married a Catherine Scanlon (born 1882)after moving to New York. I can locate him on the Census but have no clue as to whom his adopted father "Graffam" and mother were. It has been said that this Capt. Graffam was a well known sea captain in Holyoke and that there is a bronze "bust" statue of him in town. It has also been told that he adopted many orphans from Ireland. I would really appreciate any information that anyone would have on this man. The Census shows that he states being born in MA and his father in ME. This indicates a connection with all the Graffam's in Maine but I just not sure what. Your help and input would be greatly appreciated.
