I have been working on James Gray of Orange Co NC again this week...and a letter from George Michael Gray in Asheville, NC
which says in part-
He is researching
John Gray from Orange Co NC to Ga-later Perry Co Al
lived near his gg Grandfather William C Gray who was born 1812 Ga (Census)
John was in Morgan Co Ga w/his gg uncle Nelson Gray-father-in-law John Darling there in early 1820's...
Possibility that George Gray of Autauga Co Formerly Ga was Father or Uncle to Williamson and Nelson Gray
Family Tradition-these Gray's in Greene Co Ga-or vicinity before migrating to Al early 1820's, 1830's to Augauga and Perry Co AL. (Jan. 19, 1998)

Autauga Co. AL, OCM Vol 1, pg 8 & 9..ordered that Joeseph Hickman, Zachar Powell, Elisha Cain, George Gray, Sr., and Warner Williams appraise estate of James McMilliam, dec'd. (Nancy McMillian, widow)
Brenda Felder's research notes show that George Gray left Georgia in 1818 owing taxes on land. He filed for land in Autauga Co., AL in 1821. Autauga Co., AL Tract Book shows that one George Gray settled land Feb. 23, 1822, in S15-T19-R18, Cert. #703; Feb 5, 1827, in S33-T19-R18, Cert # 3011; and Oct 10, 1828, land in same S33-T19-R18, Cert #3743 (these last two purchases are probably the land that was left to his young son, James in George's will)
Autauga Co., AL Court records "Reports", Vol B, pg 291 Autauga County Reports, records the will of George Gray dated February 28th, 1830. The Will only mentions sons, John and James by name with instructions that when "my son James shall arrive to the age of twenty one, then the said money to be equally divided between all my children" (not named). George is deceased by March 5 1830.
Using Tract Book records of Autauga County, Alabama, estate records of sale, marriage records, Deeds, other court documents with witnesses, census records and other interaction of early Gray's in Autauga Co. and later Coosa Co., AL, who were contemparies of John Gray (named in his father's will), and the preponderance of evidence, it is the conclusion of the researcher that Jesse Gray, Samuel Gray, Francis Gray, and Priscilla Gray are good candidates for children of George Gray.
This family of George Gray is based on circumstantial evidence, and records of these persons extend to Autauga, Coosa, and Talladega Counties in Alabama.
George Gray's will dated Feb 1830 instructs his older son John to
"take my little son James and keep him and superintend his raising and education"; he also notes in his will that certain negros are to be sold and "the money arising from sale to be put out at interest and the interest applied to the use of rasing, educating, boarding and clothing my son James Gray." The estimated period of James birth year is based on James' being reffered to as "little" and under 21 yers of age in 1830. There is no further records on this child to determine if he lived to "come of age."

Children of George
John-
Thanks so much for answering back and for the facts and figures on this family. Had no idea who Daniel belonged to. The reason I was collecting info on that line was to try and connect another John Gray [I presume] and his wife, Rebecca Gaston who married in Morgan Co. Ga. Her mother was also a Rebecca who married the Gaston. This Rebecca [mother]
was born ca. 1757. Any thoughts on which one she might belong to? I believe John and Rebecca married 1814. Can he possibly be the John taking care of business or the son of one of the ones mentioned. So many names repeated over and over and so hard to figure. But I did not have info you sent and I appreciate.
Brenda Gray Felder [email protected]
In recapping the documentation on John Gray's life, it is apparent that he married at least three times, maybe more. He married his last wife, Laney (Peters) Connell, widow of Thomas Connell, on March 30, 1850, after the deatho f his wife, Mary whose obituary appeared in the DAILY STATE GUARD Newspaper under date of July 19, 1849 pertinent information extraceted from the article is as follows: "Died in Autauga County, (Alabama) Mrs. Mary Gray, consort of John Gray, Esq. in her 51st...a devout member of the Primative Baptist Church." (Records of the Primative Baptists in Autauga County, Alabama reference John Gray's support and active participation in the primative Baptist faith.)
Based on mary's death date in 1849 in her "51st year" suggest her birth year as 1798. Inasmuch as John's son, Jeremiah M., was born ca 1804, Mary would not be his mother, therefore, it is concluded that John had a wife prior to Mary.
Except for the marriage record of John's marriage to Laney CONNELL, a record has not been found for any prior marriages. A marriage to be considered for wife #1, was found in Columbia Co., GA...John Gray-Rebecca White - 23 September 1798; (another column shows 18 February 1797)...Another marriage to be considered was also found in Columbia Co., GA. John Gray to Nancy Lovell, 8 July, 1819. John had children born in Georgia. He named a daughter "Rebecca" and a daughter Nancy. A possible marriage to be considered for wife #2 was found in South Carolina marriages, Abbeville District, 1777-1852, pg 23 by Rev. S. Emmett Lucas, Jr., editor...John Gray and Mary Ann Creswell married in 1823. (In order for this theory to be valid, John would have to return to South carolina, However, since one Samuel Townsend, from South Carolina, was in the Coosa County, AL whose 1st wife was Mary Creswell and his 2nd wife was Mary Hagerty and John Gray's son, Uriah Gray married Serena Hagerty...the Hagerty family was in Wetumpka, AL, the possibility is more probable.) John Gray's Will dated 10 September 1867 lists the following heirs:
Item 1 - wife Laney; Item 2 - children of: 1) Uriah Gray, 2) Polly Gallehar (?Gallagher), 3) Aurelia Param (?Parham), 4) Martha Bull, 5) Sarah Paramel (?Pennywell), 6) Elizabeth Taylor; (all referred to in item 3 as "legatees"); Item 3 - (my) six living children, Jerry M., Gray, Joseph B. Gray, Elijah Gray, George Gray, Rebecca Norris, wife of Hiram Norris, Elmira Hardy, wife of John Hardy, (Note: Jeremiah Gray died after his father's Will was written in September 1867 but prior to his father's death in November 1870, therefore the Will as recorded refers to five living children but later estate records included the heirs of Jeremiah. (Note, John had two sons named "Joseph", Joseph B. born of 1st marriage, and Joseph Marion, born of 2nd marriage.
A clue to the arrival of John Gray in Alabama may be found in the Monroe County, MIssissipip Territory Orphans Court orders, before Alabama became Alabama Territory" and/or the State of Alabama..."Monroe County, Mississippi Territory - 1816-1821 Orphans Court Orders... John Gray, Francis Gray and Samuel gray attested to the Will of Wm. Moore; also Alabama Territory - Monroe County (29 Sept. 1817, John Gray, Francis Gray and Samuel Gray attested to the Will of one Richard Moore.
(It appears that John Gray, Francis Gray and Samuel Gray, whose names are connected many times in the Atauga, Coosa and Dallas County records, are probably brothers.)

James-see letter below from George Michael Gray
I am trying to find the parents of WILLIAM M. GRAY. He listed on the 1850 & 1860 census of Autauga Co. AL that he was born in GA. He was married in 1839 to Caroline Burton in Autauga Co. AL. Not sure exactly when he arrived in AL. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gordon

Samuel
Priscilla Jane Gray married James Kinchen Hammons in Autauga County, AL in 1839. I am looking for Priscilla's family. I think she is the daughter of Samuel Gray son of George Gray. There are many Gray's in Autauga County. Is there anyone out there that has done research in Autauga County that could help me verify this information and locate other siblings of Priscilla, Samuel, and/or George?
