Steve, referring once more to the 1860 Jackson Co., MS census entry for Martha and Powell BRITT, because of the sloppy way the Ass't. Marshal A. f.(sic) Ramsay did the whole thing, it does not inspire confidence in the data. Notice that the dwelling and family numbers are placed with no regard to who is actually the head of families. The Dwelling No. 316/ Family No. 318 is placed on the line with a two year old female, M. J. WILLIAMS, and then begins the household in which Powell resides headed by Martha BRITT, 20 yrs. old.
The next family seems to be headed by John ASHLY (37) with a wife, F. A. (35), and two children 16 and 13 but the dwelling and family numbers are on the line of that first child.
My point is that I don't much trust the information presented here. In that light, what do you think of the twenty year old Martha BRITT who supposedly heads the household? Could she actually be Martha GRAY, the widow of Boliver BRITT, who would be fifty to sixty years old in 1860? If not, then who is this Martha BRITT.
Next question - what happened to Powell BRITT after 1860? Did he serve in the Civil War? I can't find him anywhere.
